I get asked for business advice by other creatives all the time and I am never sure what to say, there is soooooo much I’ve learned and still want to learn! But, today I decided to share the one piece of advice I wish I would’ve listened to back when I started out- Never, ever use the D word. I believe this is the most important advice I can give you if you are wondering what direction to go in starting your creative business. It is one of my most hated words on the planet. It has a choke-hold on my business and is an ever present reminder of regret and hindsight 20/20 in my life and I will do whatever I can to be free of the beast.
I started this business on personal credit cards and although Randy and I have never used credit for anything other than business, ever, I believed the lie that you have to spend money to make money and booked my first trade shows by taking on debt. Five years later I am still paying the terrible price of those wisdom lacking decisions.
My hope in being honest and writing about it is that some young dreamer with entrepreneurial aspirations like I had will happen upon this post and make the decision to wait for God’s perfect provision for their business path. Maybe it’s you! Or maybe you can pass this advice onto others you know with big, impatient dreams that are dying to get moving at all costs! I am a living testimony that not every cost is worth it.
God is blessing my business daily, but I believe my debt has held me back from receiving some of the best things He had in store for me. I hope to catch up to His perfect plan someday soon and I trust His complete provision and GRACE in paying down every penny, but it has not been easy by any stretch.
I am praying for miracles and working as hard as I know how as I seek the promise of FREEDOM in Christ. I believe that covers every area of life, physical, spiritual, emotional and yes, financial, and am seeking Him for more understanding on how to receive what He has already done to set me free and will keep you all posted with miracles and praise reports as they come. In the meantime, I pray you take my words of wisdom born of foolish mistakes to heart. Never, ever use the D word, it’s so not worth it.
“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” Galatians 5:1
